Title: Lecture: Communication Among Un-equals
Date: Thu. Mar 28, 2013
Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

The Department of World Languages and the Hebrew Program, with USF World, the USF Library, and the Humanities Institute invite you to a lecture with Professor Elite Olshtain of Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The presentation focuses on communication based on the use of language for interaction. It will discuss findings from a variety of studies and intervention projects relating to children functioning in cross-cultural communication: Ethiopian immigrant children trying to integrate into the Hebrew speaking majority in Israel, Indigenous children in an Australian community moving along a continuum where the local Creole is at one end and Standard Australian English is at the other end, deaf children who use sign language among themselves and try to incorporate features of the spoken language, children with special educational needs and Arabic and Hebrew speakers in a bilingual school. The data collection included interviews, observation and intervention activities that exhibit pragmatic communication patterns resulting from perceptions of minority-majority relations and the need for mutual acceptance.
