A brief introduction to Chinese religious beliefs of the past and present, this course focuses on the three main belief systems in China: Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism (Taoism). Attention will be given to folk beliefs (such as ancestor worship), shamanism, and foreign religions of Christianity and Islam. We will discuss the interplay of the Chinese belief systems and how they shaped the past and today’s China. The course will include discussion and short videos.
