Title: Colonial Interlude: The Indegenization of Colonial Tunes in India
Date: Mon. Oct 25, 2010
Time: 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Description: A multimedia lecture exploring a largely unheard of, yet fascinating chunk of Indian colonial history. Two hundred years ago when the East India company colonized India, Muthuswamy Dikshitar (1775-1835), one of India's revered composers wrote sanskrit lyrics to Irish, Scottish and English tunes that arrived in India. The result is a genre of music that is neither completely Indian nor completely western. Kanniks Kannikeswaran will autograph his highly acclaimed CD recording of this first ever compilation of this genre of music at the end of the presentation.
