Title: "U.N.'s Role in Global Peacekeeping" by Dr. Kiran Bedi

Description: Kiran Bedi, Civilian Police Advisor to the United Nations and the first and highest ranking woman in the Indian Police Service, will give a lecture entitled "International Peacekeeping" on November 21. A former tennis champion, Bedi has excelled in nearly every aspect of her life. In addition to a law degree, she holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the renowned Indian Institute of Technology. In 1972, she became the first woman ever to join the Indian Police Service and is today considered by many to be an outstanding example of the changing role of women in India. Bedi is the winner of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for government service, and she has been honored by various international governments and organizations for her contributions to peacekeeping. Bedi's lecture concludes the weeklong celebration of International Education Week. The International Affairs Center is pleased to announce the fourth annual International Education Week, November 17 to 21. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, this joint initiative aims to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.
