Program Costs

Application Deposit

If you are accepted into a program, you will receive an acceptance letter after which a non-refundable deposit of $500 will be due within 14 days to hold your space.

Overall Expenses

Costs are very comparable to those incurred by full-time students living on campus at USF. Costs do however differ from program to program, depending on the economy of the host country and the partnership agreement with USF. You should make an appointment to meet with a Study Abroad Advisor at least 6 months in advance to review the estimated program cost.

Semester Program Pricing

The following information is relevant for most semester programs where reciprocal exchange is possible. Prices reflect one semester of study. Programs such as language institutes and other non-accredited institutions are not eligible for Option 1 or 2. Additional fees for graduate students may apply, as well as for full exchange programs (Nankai University). Students should see individual program descriptions for more information.

Students are responsible for completing all necessary paperwork for Financial Aid as Study Abroad Advisors do not automatically generate the needed documents. Please see the Study Abroad representative for more information. In most cases, these documents require both the student and the advisor to be present.

The Study Abroad Office is an administrative office, not an academic unit: students must secure academic approval for all credits from the appropriate academic department.

1: Competitive Reciprocal Exchange Program
Credits are considered USF direct enrollment (will appear as USF credits on your transcript) dependent upon completion of “Course Approval Forms.” Students are considered USF students for the duration of their program abroad. Financial Aid applies in most cases, but Florida Bright Futures will not count; students must contact the Office of Financial Aid for further information.

  • Fees paid to USF: $1,925; this includes:
    • Overseas courses (9 – 18 hours, depending on institution).
    • Administrative Fees
    • International health insurance for the duration of your academic program abroad
  • Housing paid to the foreign institution (averaging about $3,500, though may vary based on average cost of living).
  • Additional Expenses: Airfare, passport, immunization (if needed), visa fees (if needed), national health insurance (Australia, Canada, and Germany)

2: Fee-Paying Study Abroad
Credits will appear as foreign transfer credits on student’s official USF transcript. The student must complete the requisite “Transient Student” form with the Registrar’s Office and the Office of Financial Aid. These credits will not count towards USF’s residency requirement and is not advised for students with fewer than 30 credit hours remaining before graduation. Students must contact the Office of Financial Aid for aid eligibility.

  • Fees paid to USF: $300 + $45 a month for health insurance
  • Tuition and Housing fees are paid to the foreign institution (averaging about $3,500 for housing and $3,000 – $9,000 for tuition based on international tuition fees of the host university; may vary based on average cost of living and tuition costs).
  • Additional Expenses: Airfare, passport, immunization (if needed), visa fees (if needed), national health insurance (Australia only)

3: USF Direct Enrollment Study Abroad
Credits are considered USF direct enrollment (will appear as USF credits on your transcript) dependent upon completion of “Course Approval Forms.” Students are considered USF students for the duration of their program abroad. Financial Aid applies in most cases; students must contact the Office of Financial Aid for further information.

Fees paid to USF vary by program:

  • Instructional fees
  • $300 Administrative Fee
  • International health insurance for up to 5 months at $45 a month
  • Tuition and Housing fees are paid to the foreign institution (averaging about $3,500 for housing and $3,000 – $9,000 for tuition based on international tuition fees of the host university; may vary based on average cost of living and tuition costs).
  • Additional Expenses: Airfare, passport, immunization (if needed), visa fees (if needed), national health insurance (Australia only)

Daily Expenses

You should plan on budgeting additional money to cover meals not provided by the meal plan, and for books, entertainment and traveling. Students usually bring between $50-100 per week for spending money, depending on individual tastes. The student cafeteria or market, for example, is much cheaper than eating in restaurants while living in a city may be more expensive than living in a smaller town.
