First International Conference on Eastern & Indigenous Perspectives on Sustainability & Conflict Resolution (Conference is two days Monday & Tuesday)
CGS 140, 136 & Auditorium
Monday registration opens at 8:00 AM,  program starts at 9:00 AM 
Tuesday registration opens at 8:30 AM, program starts at 9:00 AM

National and international papers will be presented examining sustainable philosophies, collective knowledge and practices found in traditional Eastern belief structures (Hinduism, Confucianism, etc.) and in indigenous cultures (Native Americans, Australian Aborigines). The focus of the conference is to discuss these perspectives in light of globalization, identify sustainable approaches to contemporary issues and take a step toward creating global solutions.

Cancelled Instant Anthropology and the July 22nd Massacre in Norway
MSC 2708, Reception 3:30 PM, Lecture 4:00 PM

The department of Anthropology will host a reception and lecture by Thomas Hylland Eriksen. Eriksen, a professor at the University of Oslo, Norway, will focus on the recent massacre in Norway, proposing the potential of anthropology in understanding and possibly providing therapeutic and critical perspectives on sudden, dramatic events, when meticulous analysis and data collection are not an option.

Daoism (Taoism) and Sustainability
TECO Room, College of Education, 6:00 – 7:00 PM
The USF Confucius Institute presents its third presentation in the Fall 2011 Lecture Series. Dr. Ronnie Littlejohn, the Chair of Philosophy and Director of Asian Studies at Belmont University, is a well-published author on Daoism.He will introduce themes from the classical Daoist texts and refer to little known sectarian religious texts and beliefs, providing evidence of the importance of the environment in popular Daoism.

National Day of Languages

Club Creole introduces USF’s first “National Day of Languages” celebrating the history, knowledge and cross-cultural influences of languages from every corner of the globe through poster boards, brochures and more. The event encourages individuals and organizations to join in and give attendees a basic lesson in their own language making it a fun, diverse learning experience for all.

Latin@Faith-based NGOs: A Political Opportunity for Growing Communities

Dr. Milagros Peňa, professor of Social Studies and Women's Studies, and the Associate Dean of Behavioral and Social Sciences at USF, is renowned for her book 'Latina Activists Across Borders: Grassroots Women's Organizing in Mexico and Texas'. Dr. Peňa will discuss the political opportunities that are gradually emerging in growing communities. The event is sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean (ISLAC), the USF Latin Student Association and the department of Sociology.

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals: Impact on Your World: Global Citizenship in the 21st Century

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as designed by the United Nations, are a set of eight challenges that every nation and every leading development organization across the globe have agreed to meet by 2015. Hosted by USF student Jackie Briggs, this event will give attendees a detailed picture of these goals and will exhibit the effort that USF groups and organizations have made in bringing these goals closer to success. The Peace Corps is celebrating 50 years of giving Americans the opportunity volunteer in underserved communities all over the world. Peace Corps Deputy Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet will give the keynote address followed by a panel of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who will talk about their experiences. Cancelled University Lecture Series - From Apartheid to Afghanistan: Reporting from the Front Lines
MSC Ballroom, 8:00 PM
University Lecture Series is proud to have Lara Logan, current CBS News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent and 60 Minutes Correspondent, give USF students, staff, and community a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at foreign affairs in the media. Speaking candidly, South African born Logan will share her experiences both as a journalist and as a citizen reporting on war, conflict, and global change that has occurred during the two decades of her career. The award-winning journalist, who has been recognized for her work in Iraq and Afghanistan, will offer the audience compelling insight and refreshing honesty in her message of truth, courage, and integrity.

Faces of Hope: The Forgotten Children of Peru

Faces of Hope: The Forgotten Children of Peru is a photography exhibit by USF Honors College student, Danielle Grams. The exhibit is a series of portraits and biographies of the patients at El Hogar, a Peruvian clinic. Traditional Peruvian food will be served.
