STARTALK is a national, federally funded program with the mission to increase the number of Americans learning, speaking, and teaching critical need foreign languages by offering students (K–16) and teachers of these languages creative and engaging summer experiences that strive to exemplify best practices in language education and in language teacher development.

The University of South Florida is delighted to announce the fourth year of its summer USF STARTALK Chinese Academy for high school students and USF STARTALK Teacher Training and Mentorship Program for Chinese Teachers.


USF STARTALK Chinese Academy for High School Students

Dates: July 20 – August 1, 2014, Application Fee: $30 Program Fee: $300.00 (FL resident)

Motivated high school students are invited to participate in an intensive two-week residential Chinese language immersion experience designed for non-native learners of Chinese.  Instruction is offered at three proficiency levels: beginner, novice high, and intermediate. 

Participants earn 3 USF undergraduate credits in Chinese.   Tuition is subsidized.

USF STARTALK Teacher Training & Mentorship Program for Chinese Teachers

Dates: July 19 – August 1, 2014, Application Fee: $30 Program Fee: $300 (FL resident)

The USF Chinese Teacher Training and Mentorship Program is an intensive professional development institute for K-16 Chinese language teachers. This residential program has a core two-week hands-on training program that combines with pre- and post-program professional mentoring activities to provide in-service K-16 Chinese language teachers and individuals interested in teaching Chinese at the K-16 level the opportunity to enhance their teaching skills.

Participants earn 3 USF graduate credits in Chinese Pedagogy. Tuition is subsidized.

USF STARTALK Peer Mentors

Dates: July 20 – August 1, 2014

The USF STARTALK Chinese Academy is accepting applications for Peer Mentors for the 2014 academy.  Applicants must be in high school and must be native speakers of Mandarin Chinese with advanced levels of reading and writing. 

Rolling admission process.  Application Deadline: April 30, 2014.
