Hip-hop Bhangra
April 4, 2012

Dr. Madhavi Murty, visiting faculty member at Yale University in the South Asian Studies Council, presented a lecture titled “Of Hip Hop Bling and Punjabi Bhangra: Gender and Modernity in the New Times” in the Grace Allen Room at the USF Library. The lecture by Dr. Murty spoke about different aspects of the Indian movie “Ra one” and “Singh is King.” The lecture was sponsored by the Department of Communication, the Institute on Black Life, the Department of Women and Gender Studies, and the USF Center for India Studies.

Classical Musical Concert by Carnatic Brothers
March 17, 2012

The Center for India Studies in collaboration with Swaralaya presented a classical musical concert by Carnatica Brothers on March 17 at the Public Health Auditorium. Swaralaya is a cultural organization dedicated to promoting South Indian music in the Tampa Bay area. Vocalists Shashikiran and Chitravina Ganesh were accompanied by mridangam player Srimushnam Raja Rao and violinist Nagai Muralidharan.

Republic Day Celebration
January 26, 2012

The Center for India Studies in collaboration with the Students of India Associationcelebrated the Indian Republic Day on January 26. The Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs at the USF College of Pharmacy, Yashwant Pathak, hoisted the Indian flag at the Patel Center for Global Solutions. The Indian students at USF sang the national anthem and celebrated India’s 62nd Republic Day. The Constitution of India was adopted on January 26, 1950 when the nation became a democratic republic in the true sense.
