USF World Raises $2,300 to Aid Japan
April 14, 2011
Together USF students, faculty, and staff showed their collective support for the Save Japan Now initiative by purchasing over 220 t-shirts with the words “I love Japan”. The group celebrated their contribution of approximately $2,300 in aid of the victims of the recent earthquake with a group photograph. Wearing black and white t-shirts, the crowd along with President Genshaft and Sr. Vice President Holbrook bought the t-shirts through the online initiative spearheaded by USF Alum, Francis Maraj.

USF World Helps Save Japan Now
In the wake of the disaster that hit Japan on March 11, 2011, a group of students headed by USF Alum Francis Maraj have spearheaded an online initiative, www.savejapannow.com, to engage the Tampa Bay community in raising funds critical to helping Japan recuperate from the recent catastrophe.
“After I heard the news, I wanted to help the victims of the tsunami and the earthquake. Francis spoke to me about his idea and I thought selling t-shirts is a good way to help collect money for the people of Japan,” says Tomoyuki Iwai, an exchange student at USF from Kansai Gaikokugo University in Osaka, Japan.
Together, the group is making every effort to raise funds by selling t-shirts specifically designed for the purpose. Working with the University of South Florida to get the word out, the group has taken steps to ensure that all proceeds go to the Japanese Red Cross Society where donations will be converted into the local currency and find their way into the right hands.
Driving home the motivation behind the idea, founder Francis Maraj says, “I’ve always been interested in Japan and its culture and I plan on going there to work. This directly affected me; my girlfriend is Japanese and I wanted to help. I came up with the idea and it’s the best way I could help from here in Tampa.”
Making the most of social media resources, www.savejapannow.com is making its way through Facebook and Twitter to harness as much support from the Tampa Bay area as it can in the shortest possible time frame. Orders have come in from Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.
USF World is proud to support this very special initiative and hopes you will too; visit the website to order your shirt today, and look for the group at this week’s USF Bull Market on Wednesday, March 23rd.
