Dr. John Gathegi, School of Information, Presents at Nairobi UN Conference
October 19, 2011
In September 2011, Dr. John N. Gathegi, professor in the USF School of Information, made a presentation at the Global Internet Governance Forum Academic Network (GIGANet) Syposium in Nairobi, Kenya. The symposium was in conjunction with the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) that is organized by the United Nations to support the UN Secretary General in carrying out his mandate from the World Summit on Information Society. This year’s meeting was hosted in collaboration with the Government of Kenya with the theme “Internet as a Catalyst for Change: Access, Development, Freedoms and Innovation.”
The 2011 conference was held at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) and had over 2,000 participants from all over the world. This provided an opportunity to develop contacts with diverse scholars involved in social, economic and legal studies of the Internet. “I was fully able to seize that opportunity,” says Dr. Gathegi.
While in Kenya, Dr. Gathegi was also able to meet and develop important collaborative contacts at the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, and the U.S. International University.
