USF New Year of the Dragon Celebration a Great Success
January 24, 2012
On January 24th, more than 500 USF students and faculty as well as Tampa Bay community members participated in the Chinese New Year celebration. This is the largest event of its kind on campus. All guests are happy with the food and performances, including USF student talent shows, dancers from My Bright Dream Group, martial arts from the Mt. Song Martial Arts Academy, and artists of traditional music and jazz. This year’s event is unique because we had to use a huge tent set up for the watch party of the GOP Presidential Primary Debate. It turned out to be a memorable experience because we can decorate the tent with red lanterns and the tent attracted more guests.
The event brought hundreds of USF students together, especially the American students who are enrolled in Chinese language and cultural classes and Chinese students on campus. With the help of INTO USF, Chinese students have become the largest group of international students at USF. This year, we also had K-12 students including a group from Berkeley Prep School.
The event was co-sponsored by the USF Confucius Institute, Chinese Students & Scholars Association, Chinese Culture & Language Club, and INTO USF. We hope to see more collaborations in the future to co-sponsor larger events.
USF Confucius Institute is also the co-sponsor for two other Chinese New Year celebration events: one by the Tampa Bay Chinese communities (CAAT and SACA) and one by All Saints Academy. Misty Serine and Jianghua Zou performed along with the elementary school students.
