January 4, 2013
Judithanne Scourfield McLauchlan, Fulbright Scholar and Associate Professor of Political Science at USF St. Petersburg was recently published in the Journal for Civic Commitment for her project “Creating a Global Classroom.”
Dr. McLauchlan’s work in the small country of Moldova inspired her to connect students at USF and Moldova State University in a collaborative learning project. This 10-week project allowed students both in Moldova and in the United States to work together in groups in order to better understand what social issues both countries share, using social networking and other technologies such as Skype, Facebook, and Dropbox.
Students studied the issue of human trafficking and discovered how to make a positive impact in solving this complex problem in the United States and in Moldova. Students gained an understanding of the importance of engagement in their communities and learned how to connect themselves with global community partners such as student organizations, NGOs and government agencies for assistance.
