USF to Host 2013 Florida International Summit

The University of South Florida will serve as the host site for the 2013 Florida International Summit sponsored by the Florida Network for Global Studies (FNGS). This year’s keynote speaker is General John Kelly, USMC, Commander, U.S. Southern Command. The General will share Southern Command’s key priorities for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The conference theme is “Development, Defense and Diplomacy: Opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean.”  The daylong event will allow participants to discuss the possibilities for linking security, diplomacy and economic development in innovative ways that encourage greater cooperation and more robust partnerships across the region.

The Summit brings together key leaders from government, military, higher education, and private sectors to discuss the existing and emerging opportunities for development, defense and diplomatic efforts.

Guest speakers include:

  • Kay Goss, President, World Disaster Management, and former Associate Director of FEMA
  • Dr. Rubén Berrocal, National Secretary, National Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) Republic of Panama
  • Dr. Loch Johnson, Regents Professor of International Affairs and SEC Professor of the Year, University of Georgia.
  • Pietro D. Marghella, Senior Partner, Disaster Preparedness Resources & Professorial Lecturer, The George Washington University

The FNGS is a consortium of Florida universities that work to advance the exchange of information and analyses of economic, political, social and technological changes taking place in an increasingly globalized world.
