USF’s Dr. JoAnn Eickhoff-Shemek Discusses Fitness and Liability in Sydney, Australia

Dr. JoAnn Eickhoff-Shemek, Professor of Exercise Science, gave the keynote address at the innagural Is your Fitness Business at Risk? conference in Sydney, Australia on April 20th. Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek is an internationally-renowned expert in the health/fitness field and legal risk management. The title of Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek’s keynote was Risk Management and Trends in the Fitness Industry: What Australians Can Learn from the U.S. Experience, which focused on fitness safety, negligence cases, and legal risk management.
The conference was sponsored by the Australian Fitness Industry Risk Management (AFIRM) project, a 3-year study (2012-2014) funded primarily by the National Research Council. This study involves an evidenced-based approach to develop uniform safety codes, standards, and guidelines for fitness programs and facilities in Australia. Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek has been invited to contribute to this study in various capacities including being a co-author for the major outcome of the study – a risk management manual.
