Apply by December 1st to Receive a Scholarship to Spend a Semester at Sea
November 15, 2013

Education Abroad is offering a full scholarship for a USF student to participate in a unique semester-length program traveling to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Participants will travel over the spring 2014 semester aboard a 112 foot sailing vessel. The program, sponsored by Sea|mester, provides a variety of academic courses in oceanography, introduction to marine biology, and leadership as well as certifications in scuba diving and seamanship. Academic courses are typically 1000-2000 level.  The cost of the program is normally $21,470. Food, accommodation and excursions are included in Sea|mester’s fees.

The selected student will be responsible for international airfare ($2,000), spending money ($750), emergency cash reserve ($350), USF administrative costs and insurance ($700), academic transcript from their current school of record (@ $1,200 for Florida residents)  some clothing and equipment plus any vaccines/passports etc. The expected costs total approximately $5,500.

All majors are welcome to apply. As the academic program offers lower-level courses it is ideal for freshmen or sophomores, but juniors will be considered. While not a research program, students will be engaged in a variety of field experiences that will provide good training for future research opportunities.

The ship is comfortable, however students must be ready for a rugged experience – those interested in wilderness experiences would be good candidates. Students along with the 7-member crew take part in all aspects of sailing the vessel – navigating, cleaning the vessel, cooking, etc. Showers are often soaping up and jumping overboard and rinsing off.  There is no internet on board for students. In addition to on-board classes and experiences, students will go on-shore to view off-the-beaten- path sites in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

The application deadline for students is December 1, 2013.

Attend an information session with Chantale Begin on Friday November 22, 2013 at 2:00pm in MSC3301.
