CI Partnership with Qingdao University Strengthened
February 25, 2014

Last December, Dr. Roger Brindley (Vice Provost and AVP of USF World) and Kun Shi (CI Director) attended the Confucius Institute Global Conference in Beijing. They met the Qingdao University representative (ZHOU Xiaoli, Assistant President) and Hanban officials, and interacted with representatives from other universities about how to enhance CI programs and partnerships.

Afterwards, they went to Qingdao University (QU) to discuss opportunities to further strengthen the partnership. They had meetings with President WANG Anming and Vice President WANG Huanliang, as well as other officials of Qingdao University. They visited the College of Business and presented to both undergraduate and graduate students. They also met the two USF students (Gina Ferrara and Samantha Sanders) who study at Qingdao University for one year on CI Scholarship.

On December 11, Dr. Brindley and Kun Shi attended a CI Board working meeting with the QU team led by ZHOU Xiaoli, Assistant President. Other members of the QU team include Dr. JI Hua (Associate Dean), Dr. ZHANG Mingjian (to be CI Associate Director), Dr. MA Doucheng (VP of the Teachers College), Dr. WANG Zhengyuan (VP of the College of Chinese Language), Mr. ZHOU Yunxu and Ms. Fang Fang (Office of International Programs). The meeting agenda includes:

  • Dr. Brindley and AP Zhou opened the meeting with introductions to the two universities and expressed strong interest in strengthening their partnerships. (More information about QU is available at http://global.usf.edu/confucius/qingdao.php.)
  • QU confirmed three CI Board members: President WANG Anmin, Assistant President ZHOU Xiaoli, and Ms. LIU QI, Associate Director for International Programs.
  • Kun Shi presented a report of the CI work in 2013 and future plans. PDF report here
  • Both sides explored areas of mutual interests and possible collaborations in the future. They include:
    • In addition to the Chinese language teachers, the possibility of offering Chinese art and business courses with QU teachers through the CI. All teachers need to have graduate degrees in the subject areas they teach, and may need further professional development right before and after their arrival at USF;
    • Feasibility of an internship program for the QU Masters of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Program;
    • Possibility of faculty and student exchanges in areas other than Chinese and English language programs;
    • Collaboration on the joint Confucius Classroom at Hillsborough County Public Schools (with the Shibei Middle School affiliated to QU) and the CI Day event in September.
