USF-CI Successfully Hosted Another Cultural Performance Troupe from China
May 9, 2014
The Northwest Normal University (NWNU) Troupe from China staged performances at four Confucius Institutes in Florida and Texas in early May. Because of their scheduled time in Tampa on May 5-6 (when USF is in summer session), we arranged the troupe to perform at our partner school and college in Sarasota on May 6.
Twenty-two artists from NWNU performed for more than 500 students at Pine View School in the morning and for 300 college students and community members at the New College in the evening. The performances include Chinese music, ethnic dances and martial arts. The audiences were intrigued by the music of various instruments and different forms of martial arts. They were particularly excited when the suona player walked down the stage playing the high-pitched music. A group of Pine View School students were thrilled for group photo taken with the performing artists. At the Sainer Auditorium of New College, the audience gave repeated cheers and standing ovations to the amazing performances.
The performances were collaborative efforts of NWNU, USF-CI, Pine View School and the New College. We are very pleased that they helped the Chinese program at PVS (which has a Confucius Classroom) and shared the colorful Chinese cultures with the Tampa Bay community.
The NWNU troupe was led by Vice President YU Shuqing and Artistic Director DENG Xiaojuan. Funding for the troupe was provided by the Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters.
