CI Lecture – Working towards World Peace: A General’s Story about U.S.-China Relations

On September 19, 2014 from 4pm to 5pm, General Bernard Loeffke delivered a public lecture on “China: Friend or Enemy? A General’s Story” to the USF and community members at Patel Center Auditorium. General Loeffke is adjunct clinical professor at the Barry University Physician Assistant Program, the founder of Helping Others Today, the author of numerous books and a distinguished soldier-statesman with an illustrious career in the United States Army.
CI Director Kun Shi welcomed everyone and Dr. Malani, Director the USF World Center for Strategic & Diplomatic Studies introduced Gen. Loeffke. Gen. Loeffke’s lecture started with his touching words with the audience, unfolded with his own experience about China as a soldier, general and diplomat, and ended with his inspirational ideas for the promotion of US-China relationship and world peace. About 90 people were present at the lecture, which was well received and appreciated by the audience. After the lecture, a book-signing was conducted by Gen. Loeffke. The lecture was co-sponsored by the USF World Center for Strategic & Diplomatic Studies.
The day before (September 18) at Saint Petersburg College, Gen. Loeffke delivered a lecture on the same topic, which was also well received by the college staff and students at the Seminole campus and other campuses through video streaming.
Gen. Loeffke’s connections to China are historically-significant. He served as defense attaché to the People’s Republic of China (becoming the first U.S Army General assigned to the American Embassy in China) and in 1973 co-led with Collin Powell, the first delegation of White House Fellows to China. Although in a new phase of his life, Gen. Loeffke remains committed to bridging the US public to China. In 1995, he established the Friendship Fund to dismantle post-war tensions between nations and foster the human connection between American and Chinese soldiers and statesmen. His book, China: Our Enemy? A General’s Story, continues his legacy of helping the world see China from the human lens.
