Further CI Collaboration with FFLA and K-12 Chinese Programs
October 28, 2014
Our CI has participated with presentations at the annual conferences of Florida Foreign Language Association (FFLA) for the last few years. This year, at the FFLA annual conference held on October 16-18 in Miami, we increased our collaboration by ordering a table for outreach (CI listed as a supporter) and delivering two presentations(“Teaching Chinese through TV Series” by Yanfeng Wang and “Understanding Chinese Cultural Diversity” by Kun Shi) to members of the Florida Chinese Teachers Association and others. More information is at http://www.ffla.us.
On October 16, with help from Gudrun Martyny, Executive Director of the FFLA, we coordinated a panel presentation and performance with the Miami Dade College CI for a group of world language supervisors from the Florida Administrators & Managers Education World Language Association. Directors Kun Shi and Jim Yu introduced the CI mission of supporting Chinese language programs and facilitating cultural exchange, and offered assistance if any Florida schools or school districts want to improve their Chinese language programs or start new ones. The assistance may include teacher professional development, joint cultural activities and performance, summer camp to China for high school students, and more. Then, artists Kui Tan played hulusi and erhu music, and Pei Liu and Shannon Liu performed Peking opera and dancing. We appreciate the support from Chane Eplin, Chief of Bureau of Student Achievement through Language Acquisition, Florida Department of Education. The event laid a good foundation for the Confucius Institutes in Florida to collaborate more with K-12 schools and play a significant role in supporting the K-12 Chinese programs in Florida schools.
