A Successful Closure for the USF-CI in 2014
February 6, 2015
Thanks to the support from the USF leadership and our partner Qingdao University, the USF-CI has made great achievements in 2014. The achievements include enhanced support to K-12 Chinese programs (such as the summer camp in China for high school students and the fourth annual conference for over a hundred teachers from Florida and five other states), and expanded support to USF and the Tampa Bay communities (such as four non-credit classes on Chinese culture and language). Details of the achievements and media reports are in the 2014 Annual Report and a recent USF-CI Report.
In early December, the USF team led by Dr. Brindley (with Kun Shi and Mingjian Zhang) attended the 9th Confucius Institute Conference held in Xiamen. Dr. Brindley presented “The CI’s Role on Community Impact” at the Presidents Forum on December 8.
The CI Board meeting was held on December 10 at Qingdao University (QU), presided by President WANG Anmin, with Dr. Brindley representing the CI Board members from USF. Present at the meeting were CI Board members ZHOU Xiaoli (Assistant President of QU) and LIU Qi (Director of International Programs at QU). Kun Shi and Mingjian Zhang were at the meeting.
Dr. Brindley expressed gratitude to QU for providing faculty to teach Mandarin Chinese for the USF Department of World Languages and accepting USF students to study. President Wang appreciated the current partnership with USF and hoped to see CI playing a role in economic cooperation between Qingdao and Tampa. During the meeting, Kun Shi presented a CI report for 2014 and outlined a proposed plan for 2015. All CI Board members affirmed their support to the CI work and recommended to expand the QU-USF partnership.
