2015 CI Day Events Completed at USF
November 3, 2015
The second annual “Confucius Institute (CI) Day” celebration was a series of events held from September 22 to 28 with great success at the University of South Florida and beyond. The total number of participants exceeded two thousand.
“CI Day” is a celebration of Chinese cultures and an opportunity for cultural exchange, with performances and hands-on activities for students and community members. It is also a celebration in honor of the Chinese philosopher and educator, Confucius (September 28, 551–479 BC). Teachers in Mainland China and Taiwan are honored on this day, which is the official Teacher’s Day.
Three events paved the way to the final “CI Day” celebration on September 28.
Finally, the “CI Day” celebration attracted nearly 600 participants, including 400 students and teachers from seven middle and high schools in Tampa Bay region (namely: Thurgood Marshall MS, Pine View School, Middleton HS, Safety Harbor MS, Countryside HS, Clearwater HS, and Village of Excellence Academy). Welcome remarks were delivered by USF President Judy Genshaft and Dr. Roger Brindley, Vice Provost and USF System AVP for USF World. Greetings were also relayed from President FAN Yuejin of Qingdao University.
Excellent performances were staged by performing artists, including professional Peking opera artist YU Jie, musician TANG Changkui, and martial artists from Mt. Song Academy. Hands-on learning activities included calligraphy, games and chess, paper-cutting, Chinese opera and music, tea-tasting and kung fu acts. Participants also received snacks and cultural items such as lucky knots and bookmarks.
The series of “CI Day” events played a positive role in facilitating cultural exchange in the Tampa Bay area and supporting Chinese language programs at USF and K-12 schools.
