Celebrating the Chinese New Year Season at USF, Community and K-12 Schools
February 19, 2016

The USF Confucius Institute worked with numerous partners to provide multiple cultural events during the 2016 Chinese New Year season. The events reached thousands of people of all age groups in the Tampa Bay region and beyond, and improved cross-cultural understanding.

The main event hosted by the CI and partners was the USF Chinese New Year (CNY) Celebration held on February 8 in the Marshall Student Center Oval Theater. More than 600 USF students, faculty/staff and community members attended. The event opened with lion dancers from the Mt. Song Martial Arts Academy, followed by welcome remarks from Provost Ralph Wilcox  and greetings from the co-sponsors. The emcees were an excellent example of cultural exchange, with the American student (Lindsey O’Brien) speaking in Chinese and the Chinese student (Di Li) speaking in English.

For 90 minutes the audience enjoyed a wide variety of performances from professionals and talented students. Before the event, video clips about China and Chinese culture were shown, and toward the end door prizes were drawn with restaurant certificates, CI gift items and daily passes to the Ringling Museum.

The CI also co-sponsored several other CNY events including:

  • The Museum Night event at UF Harn Museum of Art; January 14
  • CNY event by the Chinese American Association of Tampa Bay at Wesley Chapel Center for the Arts; February 6
  • Event at Thurgood Marshall Middle School, St. Petersburg; February 9
  • Event at the Village of Excellence Academy, Tampa; February 12
  • Event by the Suncoast Association of Chinese Americans at Largo Central Park; February 13
  • Event at Safety Harbor Middle School, Safety Harbor; February 18

It is estimated that more than five thousand people participated in the above CNY related events.
