USF Confucius Institute Co-Sponsored Florida Chinese Competition and “Teachers of the Year” Awards
February 24, 2017
The Florida Chinese Teachers Association (FCTA) and Saint Andrew’s School organized the 12th annual statewide Chinese Competition on February 10-11, 2017, in Boca Raton. The USF Confucius Institute (CI) was proud to be a co-sponsor of the event benefiting the growing K-12 Chinese programs in Florida schools.
Nearly 350 middle and high school students from 20 schools across Florida competed in multiple areas of Chinese language and culture, including oral presentation, writing, talent performance and jeopardy games involving some very difficult questions about Chinese culture and history. First place group winners for the jeopardy games are middle school students from Pine View School and students from Olympic High School. Pine View School also won the first place in calligraphy. Many teachers and some CI staff acted as judges and worked hard grading writing competitions.
Early morning on February 11, the CI director Kun Shi delivered the opening remarks. He thanked the students and teachers for their participation, and FCTA for the partnership for the annual competition. He also encouraged the students to take every opportunity in learning Chinese language and culture (including the YCT test and summer camp sponsored by the CI). Later in the afternoon, he introduced the retired army general Bernard Loeffke who made an inspiring speech and emphasized the importance of US-China relations. Gen. Loeffke has been a friend to China since the 1970s and he gave CI lectures at USF in September 2014 (report at http://global.usf.edu/wordpress/?p=4567&cat=31).

Towards the end of the event, Ms. Chu-Chuan Chiu (FCTA president) and Kun Shi announced two “Teachers of the Year” — Ms. Yan Li from Ponte Vedra High School and Ms. Hua Zhang from Saint Andrew’s School. Each year, FCTA selected two teachers for the awards through member nomination and voting by the officers. FCTA appreciates the USF-CI for sponsoring the awards since 2013.
