Confucius Institute Lectures by Dr. Smagula, Dr. Tian and More in the Spring
May 26, 2017

Our USF Confucius Institute (CI) sponsors typically host at least three CI lectures each semester. This spring, however, we did much more by hosting and co-sponsoring six lectures with several prominent invited speakers.

On February 8, Dr. John Smagula of Temple University presented “Green or Black?  Understanding Chinese Tea” at the USF Patel Center for Global Solutions. About 80 participants from USF and the community learned the difference between Chinese white, green, wulong, black, and dark teas by seeing, smelling and tasting. Dr. Smagula’s unique knowledge on tea and presentation skill attracted great interests from the audience. He is an associate professor and the Executive Director for Temple University’s Greater China Office, who speaks fluent Chinese and is a Certified Tea Specialist both in China and the United States. More information about Dr. Smagula is available here.

Dr. Haihe Tian delivered a CI lecture on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on March 30 at the USF Byrd Institute. Dr. Tian spoke on TCM several times at USF in the past, and this time the focus was on Chinese herbal medicine as the USF College of Pharmacy was one of the co-sponsors. Nearly 100 USF students/faculty and community members attended the very informative lecture. Dr. Tian earned his PhD at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and he has been teaching and practicing TCM in the Tampa Bay region since 1997. He holds many titles including President of the American TCM Association. More information about Dr. Tian is available here.

Other lectures include:

  • Don Worth presented a lecture on April 13 at the Ringling Museum of Art, based on his book Art Deco Architecture in Shanghai and Miami Beach. About 100 people from the Tampa Bay region attended the lecture about the architectural similarities of the two cities. The event co-sponsors included the USF Confucius Institute and the US-China Peoples Friendship Association-Sarasota.
  • On March 27, the USF CI provided an hour-long lecture and performance at Brookdale Senior Living Options in St. Petersburg. About 80 residents attended the lecture (Diversity of Chinese Cultures) by Kun Shi and enjoyed guzheng music by Huiruo Chen and dance by Mengnan Wang (both graduate students at USF). The residence coordinator was grateful to our presentations about Chinese cultures to the residents.
  • On April 13, Kun Shi spoke on “Understanding China’s Diversity” at the University of Havana’s Confucius Institute. More than 50 students and faculty attended the event with great interest in the multi-faceted Chinese cultures.
  • On May 19, Jinping Du presented the lecture “Ornaments on Chinese Clothing” to demonstrate common Chinese ornamental patterns on clothes and their cultural-historical meanings. Nearly 30 OLLI members and others attended the lecture. Ms. Du is a professor from Qingdao University and currently serves as associate director of the USF CI.
