Annual “Confucius Institute Day” Events Completed
October 16, 2017
The fourth annual “Confucius Institute (CI) Day” celebration was held on September 28 during 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the USF Patel Center for Global Solutions. Participants included about 200 middle-high school students and teachers from the Middleton High School and Village of Excellence Academy.
“CI Day” celebration this year targeted K-12 students, with cultural performances and hands-on activities. It is also a celebration of the “Teachers’ Day” in the Chinese speaking world in memory of the 2,568th birthday of Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher and educator.
After welcome from Dr. Roger Brindley (USF System Vice President for USF World) and Kun Shi (CI Director), and recognition of the Chinese language teachers, the participants enjoyed amazing performances, such as the lion dance by Middleton HS students, long-sleeve dance by Jie Yu, fast talk kuaiban by Nabil Smith, and bamboo flute music by Changkui Tang. Then, they went to different areas to experience cultural activities, including calligraphy, Chinese chess, chop-stick games, martial arts, papercuts, puzzles, Peking opera and musical instruments. A light lunch was served with spring rolls and dumplings, and all students received colorful folding fans. The participants were thankful to the CI staff and volunteers for providing such a great learning opportunity.
Finally, the CI lecture “Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Your Wellbeing” was delivered by Dr. Haihe Tian, a TCM professor and practitioner, and current President of the American TCM Association. More USF and community members came to the lecture. Dr. Tian introduced the TCM basics and taught some self-massage methods which were highly appreciated.
